● Darkness Descends completely fulfilled the promise that was so apparent on We Have Arrived. Now the band had found the true formula of intense thrash metal, and the result is a wonderful combination of fast riffs, some very hard-hitting drumming, and striking vocals. Many tracks are faster than ever before (Burning Of Sodom almost to the extent of being ridiculous) and this album is some real fun to listen to. My only gripe with it is the production which, while still pretty decent, has lost some clarity compared to the band's debut. Other than that, Darkness Descends is a great thrash metal album and unarguably Dark Angel's best release. USA 1986

● Pese a su corta trayectoria, en la que solo dejaron un legado de dos álbumes, el quinteto Exumer sigue siendo recordado (por pocos, eso sí) como una excepcional banda que tuvo la desgracia de contar con muy buenos competidores.
Ensombrecidos por Kreator o Destruction, fueron un espécimen un tanto extraño dentro del Thrash Metal alemán, ya que las influencias de combos americanos como Exodus y muy especialmente Slayer estaban bastante marcadas; de ahí a que muchos los llamasen despectivamente los ‘Slayer europeos’.
Ritmos de infarto, temas cortos pero tremendamente intensos y un sonido apabullante por momentos hacen de “Possessed By Fire” uno de los tesoros mejor escondidos del Thrash europeo.

● Quien decía que Australia solo ha exportado buenos grupos de Rock ‘n’ Roll como AC/DC o Rose Tatoo se equivocaba totalmente. Cierto que el Thrash nunca llegó a pegar fuerte en el continente oceánico, aunque sí llegó a aparecer alguna buena banda como del estilo, como es el caso de Mortal Sin.
A pesar de su corta pero intensa carrera, nunca consiguieron sobrepasar el umbral del underground, aunque resulta gratificante que un álbum como “Mayhemic Destruction” siga siendo recordado, por muy pocos, sí, pero recordado.
Estamos hablando de un disco del más poderoso Thrash; medios tiempos aplastantes, solos vertiginosos, una base rítmica de escándalo, y sobretodo, unos riffs que dejan boquiabierto a cualquiera. Temas como “The Battle Of Lebanon”, “Blood, Death, Hatred”, “Into The Fire” o “Mortal Slaughter” son las grandes bazas de posiblemente el mejor álbum de Thrash Metal que haya dado el hemisferio sur.

●Whiplash were a real cult band in the early thrash metal scene and surely proved their worth already on their first release. Power And Pain is full of relentless, straightforward pounding and the band's characteristic machine gun riffs. Although a lot of the material sounds a bit samey to me and Tony Portaro's vocals are extremely raw, there's something fresh and honest in this kind of no-nonsense thrash supported by adequate production values. Granted, it's not exactly a great piece of art, but with track titles like Stage Dive and Power Thrashing Death you know what to expect and no less. Don't let the primitive looks fool you, Power And Pain contains an essential dose of old thrash metal done in the true Whiplash style.

●Nunca un título ni una portada reflejaron tan claramente la intensidad y fuerza como la que se puede encontrar en el debut de Whiplash. Cierto que su increíble y no menos recomendable “Ticket To Mayhem” (1987) fue y sigue siendo su disco más recordado, pero el gancho que desprende “Power And Pain” no lo convierte en un disco que pueda pasar fácilmente desapercibido, si bien, tanto hoy en día la banda como el disco han sido olvidadas.

Whiplash fueron Tony Portaro (voz, guitarra), Tony Bono (bajo, fallecido en el 2002) y Tony Scaglione (batería, y sustituto de Dave Lombardo en Slayer durante un tiempo), un trío sólido y perfectamente equilibrado, capaz de dejarnos vibrantes trallazos como “Last Man Alive” o “Reb Bombs”. Hay que señalar que Whiplash fueron la banda más salvaje y rápida de la primera generación del Thrash americano, aunque no tardarían en ser eclipsados por la monolítica violencia del “Reign In Blood” de Slayer.

Pocos años después, Roadrunner ‘olvidó’ a este “Power And Pain”, y por ello no tardaría en convertirse en una pieza de culto dificilísima de conseguir, hasta que el sello holandés Displeased Records compró los derechos y lo reeditó en el 2001.
